WITH the VCES inching towards its deadline, it has finally forced the Union Finance Minister to spare some time out of his hectic schedule. And he did so when he landed here to attend an Interactive Session on the VCES along with his MoS(R) and the Member (Service Tax) last Saturday.
While addressing the large gathering, the FM emphasised that the Government is keeping an eye on many sectors prone to service tax evasion like real estate, IT and consultancy. He said that he has noticed serious evasion of service tax in Chennai by sectors like contract services, transport operators, advertisement, manpower and recruitment and repair service.
In the background of chronic evasion of service tax the Finance Minister urged the industry and trade to make use of the Voluntary Compliance Encouragement Scheme. "I am assuming everyone is a honest citizen. You are honest in most actions. When you make a vow before your favourite deity, you are honest. You go and carry out the vow. You are honest while you are dealing with your spouse, children. Why should you be not honest with the tax department?", he asked.
He urged the taxpayers to pay their tax dues as non-payment might be out of ignorance or financial hardship. In this background, the VCES offers a very good amnesty scheme with no obligation to pay any interest, any penalty or face any prosecution.
